Where does my produce come from?

Where does my produce come from?

In the world of Fresh Produce, a Bird Dog is a person who travels to the fields and coolers to inspect the fruits and vegetables. It is with expertise & years of experience that they are able to make a recommendation whether to buy or move on to the next crop. A Bird Dog is your eyes and ears in the produce field. We are here to be your personal Bird Dog.

Produce in the United States comes from many places and many farms. Most of the fresh produce is grown in California and Arizona, but many other states play a huge role in growing fresh produce. Most of our Apples & Pears come from Washington & Oregon. Hawaii grows almost 1/3 of all pineapple for consumption in the World. Florida grows 70% of the supply of fresh oranges. Idaho leads the nation in potato production, producing 1/3 of all US potatoes.

As you can see from the examples above, these items must be moved from the farm to a distribution hub, to the. store before you can even buy it. Depending on where you live, this can amount to many miles and days of travel time. All these travel days take away from the shelf life of the product.

When it comes to your grocery store produce, an interesting fact is that fresh produce typically spends up to half of its shelf life in transit from supplier to supplier. A statistic that gets used often is that fresh produce travels an average of 1,500 miles before it gets to your local retailer. This adds days to each item before you can even buy it!

At Bird Dog Produce, our direct channel to the farm combined with the continuous cold chain allows us to bring you produce that is fresher than any grocery store produce. We often have items that are 24 hours from harvest, ready to be delivered fresh to your home. Farming is a family business, and we are proud to work with the top farms and families in the country. You can see and taste the difference when you shop at Bird Dog Produce. Let us be your Bird Dog.
